Upon meeting a Chilean family in Schiedam, my interest in the Latin-American culture reemerged, as it did when I visited South America a few years back. I wondered where this feeling of connection came from, since my background is not related to this culture. This project is my journey of discovering the answer to this question.

Using the AI program DCGAN I merged all visual evidence that connected me to Latin-America and its culture and created new images which I then curated for this book. I wrote an introduction to the book that also answers the question I asked myself at the beginning of the project. For the exhibition I created an installation around the book which contributed to the overall experience that I wanted the audience to have while looking at the book.

I miss the warmth, sense of community and passion that the Latin-American culture has in the Dutch culture I grew up in. With this photo book I take you with me to my imaginary escape, where all the things I love about Latin-American culture come together. While the abstractness of the images leave enough room for your own imagination, I created the installation around the book in a way where you can get a sense of nostalgia like looking through old photo books at your grandparents place.
